Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come. For months, burger scavengers August J. Creter and Aidan L. Moore have continued their voyage to track down and devour the greatest burgers hidden within the Cookeville city limits. This time, however, we will be celebrating the final installment by travelling to more diner-based establishments, with only one exception.
We begin Saturday, Feb. 6 at the renowned restaurant Bobby Q’s, known for their exquisite barbecue and delectable catfish. Many seem to forget that they serve a burger, called the Q Burger, and as the menu states, “It’s a classic.” Topped with what felt like a tower, the burger, cooked at a classic medium, contained pickle, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and American cheese on a toasted bun.
The Q Burger is your average, run-of-the-mill burger, but the very evident mustard flavor elevates the burger to a very tasty experience, which we evaluated at about 3.75 mmm’s.
We recommend ordering the Barbecue Pork Plate and adding pork and spicy barbecue sauce on top of your Q Burger, which adds a little extra special flare and takes the Q Burger to 4mmm’s. On dining, freshman Pete Stone exclaimed, “Q Burger -- More like cute burger! I’d take it out.”
Our next destination was perched upon Cookeville’s greatest hill. Standing adjacent to Tennessee Tech University, a small diner named Mini Burger was cooking up small, hot patties at the very reasonable price of $1 per burger. We each ordered Mini Cheeseburgers and were pleasantly surprised. Containing only diced onions, cheese, one pickle, and a thin patty, the bite sized delight earned a noble 2.75 mmm’s.
Mini Burger is a classic Cookeville spot, and for good reason. Here, you will get a better bang for your buck than any other place in town. The novelty of a diner based on small burgers for a great price is one that has yet to wear out on many Cookevillians.
Our final location was a clear juxtaposition to the tiny-themed-diner. While classic burger spot Dipsy Doodle still fits the mold of a diner, their pitch is offering what they call “The Giant Cheeseburger.” On their burger you can find lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, mayonnaise, pickles, and a “giant” patty.
While the patty’s circumference could definitely be described as large, the width kept it from obtaining its “giant” title. This was truly a traditional burger with traditional toppings in a traditional diner, and was cooked very well. While quite flavorful, it lacked that special touch to distinguish it from the crowd, and ended with a respectable score of 3.5 mmm’s.
Tragically, this is the end of the Bussin' Boys Burger Trilogy. We hope that we have informed you of the best burgers in town. Be on the lookout for our next food review, and long live burgers.
