Following the dual advertising of “Barbie'' and “Oppenheimer,” CHS students have been frantically raiding the AMC Highland 12. Along with the so-called “Barbenheimer” came the releases of highly anticipated films “Asteroid City” and “Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse.”
Undoubtedly the most popular film this year, Barbie has attracted countless pre-teen girls and nostalgic film critics alike. Although the in-your-face humor and debatably corny musical moments can be a bit much at times, Greta Gerwig’s directing talent makes up for this and the movie is a fun watch nonetheless. The ironic portrayal of men and women’s roles in society makes a powerful statement for feminism and helps viewers to recognize these themes outside of Barbie Land as well. 9/10
“I think [the message] is really good. People say ‘oh it’s 2023 women can get the same jobs as men now’ but that doesn’t change how we’re perceived in the business world and in the real world,” said IB Coordinator Emily Chambers.
Oppenheimer may have received plenty of critical acclaim, but this movie was honestly quite boring. We’re not going to pretend that we didn’t fall asleep during this movie, but why should we care about a group of dead men who created a bomb to unnecessarily kill hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese people? The only part of this film that made it worth our while was a certain scene involving a certain Florence Pugh. 6/10
“Oppenheimer? More like stoppenheimer this movie right now. I can’t stand seeing that guy naked. Or at least, that’s what I’ve heard. I haven’t seen the movie,” said senior Cooper Austin.
Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse was undoubtedly a beautifully animated film. Every detail was stunning, however many overlook the lack of emotional depth or a compelling story. The first Spider-verse comparatively achieved both of these things. This new film’s plot was quite messy, and the pacing in no way helped. The plot elements work on paper, but with so many ideas thrown in at random, the execution is mediocre at best. On top of all of that, this film lacked any semblance of a resolution, and while this may work in the trilogy, as a standalone movie it just left us feeling disappointed. 7/10
Objectively the best film of the summer, Asteroid City was an exciting release for Wes Anderson fans, but it ultimately flew under the radar for many CHS students. Not only is Asteroid City one of Anderson’s most visually appealing films to date, but the plot was by far his most inventive. The story structure, although slightly confusing upon first watch, gives the film multiple layers to dissect, allowing for rewatchability. The film’s dry humor may be an acquired taste, but to those who find it appealing, the comedic moments land consistently. Anderson’s signature style continues to shine in this film, and it is a must watch for all who enjoy great cinematography. 9.5/10
