On Dec. 31, 2020, it was announced on social media that rapper and producer Daniel Dumille, widely known by the alias MF DOOM, had passed away two months prior on Oct. 31, 2020 at the age of 49.
This news shocked the hip hop community, as DOOM has been cited as one of the most influential rappers of the 21st century. He was known for his hypnotic flow and tongue twisting rhymes, as well as his comedic flair.
Known as hip hop's illest villain, DOOM has built a legacy on one main symbol: his mask. The mask represents his character, created in the visage of the Marvel Comics villain, Dr. Doom, and was worn at every public showing of DOOM. The mask was utilized to build a sense of illusion around the “DOOM” name and Dumille’s identity.
Not only is his image iconic, but his music is just as recognizable -- his most notable project is “Madvillainy,” a joint effort with producer Madlib. The classic collaboration is regarded as one of the greatest rap albums of all time and maybe the most acclaimed underground rap album ever.
His solo albums, especially “MM… FOOD” and “Operation: Doomsday,” feature DOOM’s unheard-of rhyming ability, creative production and raspy, villainous tone.
DOOM’s reputation as “Your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper” is a well deserved one -- many of the most commercially successful rappers ever have credited DOOM as an inspiration. Among others, modern rappers like Drake, Tyler, the Creator, and Kanye West have cited DOOM’s music as a great influence, further solidifying DOOM’s legacy through their music.
MF DOOM’s impact on hip hop will evidently be felt for decades to come, and as the genre continues to grow, rappers will be influenced by DOOM’S dizzying rhymes and pure talent on the mic. RIP DOOM, and “remember all caps when you spell the man name.”
