After Mace Thomsen graduated last year, we were left with a hole on our football roster. This season, we have two players in active contention for starting Cavs quarterback, the first of which is Blake Owen.

Owen seems to be the day one starter this year and has seen the field with the first team offense. Going into his junior year, Owen has already played his fair share of games. Last year, he put together 21 receiving yards, 17 passing yards, 99 rushing yards and 36 total tackles.

His wide range of athleticism gives him an advantage on the field most players don’t seem to have. His pocket presence so far has been fairly good, and he can make plays out of the pocket as well. The best of his abilities though is by far his physicality. He started as a rush passer last year and is now well over 200 lbs. This attribute can make a strong contribution when faced with a defender.

Despite Owen’s outstanding résumé, sophomore Brody Allen is clear cut competition for this spot.Even without Owen’s stats, Allen puts up just as much of a fight for quarterback.

After starting for the freshman team last year, Allen had multiple games with two or more passing touchdowns and a very run-heavy offense. Allen showed last year that his out of pocket ability is a huge threat, and his agility makes him a way harder target for any defender coming for a tackle.

Above it all, it is certain that his ball placement is his biggest strength. Most corner routes or streaks are spot on and really easy catches for his receivers. Allen has also been seen getting some first team reps and has put forward his best play yet.

For the foreseeable future, there is still room for debate on the field. Quarterback is the most important position, so whoever decides to show out, our offense will follow.
